Why Accessible India Campaign?

                                                    image177

Story 1: Oh! See he can’t see with his eyes at all, aww poor guy!

That’s it? And then we pass the place and that guy, and out of sight is out of mind. How would showing sympathy help them?

Story 2: Kid 1: Papa! Can we go for the movie that released on this Friday? It has got good reviews.

Papa: (Looking at his daughter feeling dejected) and how we take your dear sister to the

hall?

Plan for the movie cancelled! Kid 1: Sad, Sister: Cursing herself, Papa: Feeling helpless

And you know why? The girl was on her crutches, she couldn’t go for the movie.

So, many people must have an impression that this is a central government campaign, and won’t be taken care of well. Friends, this campaign is for a good cause. Let’s see it at a glance!

Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) has launched Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan) as a nation-wide Campaign for achieving universal accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).

Have you ever wondered why people with disabilities are nowhere to be seen at the movie halls? Because the places like these are not accessible for them, friends!

The campaign comes with a wise thought of making India accessible for these people because probably talent ignored and oppressed is harming the Indian economy in the long run.

If they aren’t able to access the buildings they need it’s a problem with the buildings and not with them. Construction of ramps in every public building, accessible toilets etc. This comes under Built Up Environment. This is one of the three aims of this campaign.

If someone doesn’t have eyes or legs, it doesn’t mean he/she doesn’t want to bask in the glory of nature! Here comes the needs of their travelling, their visiting beautiful India, enjoy the verdure, which calls for the transportation facilities to be accessible for them. So that they can use the transport with dignity and independence. The revised National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP), 2014 includes universal accessibility in all the planning and implementation interventions. This beautiful process comes under Transport systems of this incredible campaign. Well-lit streets, bus shelters, audible traffic signals are some of the objectives of this, space to park the wheel chairs with the equal dignity.

In a mishappening, which, god forbid, can happen with anyone. Anyone can lose on their legs, hearing ability, or eyesight. This doesn’t take anyone’s talent to work harder and excel in their fields!

The problem in the eyesight or hearing should not be a hindrance for them if they also want to have an access to information, which as a consequence creates opportunities. We have no right to deprive them of this access. So the next objective of the accessible India campaign is to make all the information on the internet accessible for the persons with disabilities. No longer should societal barriers of infrastructure, and inaccessible formats stand in the way of obtaining and utilizing information in daily life. Audio in every website to be developed, and much more! This comes under ICT Eco system.

At the end I would like to mention, this is an incredible and a beautiful move by the government, come forward, and take a pledge with me. As, despite having blessed with all the abilities, of we aren’t able to make India accessible for the disables, then sorry we are disabled and not them.

Take the pledge: I pledge to support, to support Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya bharat abhiyaan) to achieve universal accessibility for the people with disabilities!
